Gareth James, 41, believed he was targeting someone who owed him money but when he opened the computer he saw the owner’s name and realised his mistake.
He confessed the error to a pub barmaid and the prosecution said: “He told her he had done something stupid. He felt embarrassed he had gone to the wrong house.”
So James, of Brecon, Powys, let himself in via an open door at the home of student Benjamin Price, 23 – and was arrested.
At Merthyr Tydfil crown court he admitted burglary. He was given a four-month suspended jail sentence and ordered to go on a thinking skills programme.
